Wyong trainer Stephen Farley has faith in Mr McBat’s natural ability which is why he’s sending him to the $100,000 Gosford Provincial Championships Qualifier (1200m) on Thursday at Gosford Race Club’s The Entertainment Grounds.
Mr McBat has had six starts for two wins and two seconds.
“He’s come along really well this preparation but he’ll need to step up on Thursday if he’s to qualify. He’s improving quickly and I’m confident he has the ability.”
Mr McBat has been second twice and first once this campaign including a last-start runner-up finish to Magic Alibi, which has won a couple of metropolitan races in a short career.
“He was beaten by a pretty good horse last time and he’s always shown me a lot of ability and he attacks the line,” Farley said.
The Wyong horseman admitted that Mr McBat would have an even better chance of qualifying for the Provincial Championships Final in 2017, but he won’t be eligible if he wins four more races between now and then.
Something Farley feels he has the ability to do.
“It was always on the radar for him as soon as he got back into work this time, but the only concern would be that it’s all come a bit too early for him,” he said.
“Twelve months is a long time in racing and if we wait until next year he might not be eligible. I think 1400 metres will be his ideal distance and four runs at 1000 metres, 1100 metres and 1200 metres then into the 1400 metres of the final should be fine.”
