Kristen Buchanan will head her mare Dual Escape towards the Provincial Championships if she can score a home track victory at Saturday’s Summer Festival Wyong meeting.
The four-year-old lines up in the 1350m Fillies and Mares Benchmark 66 and the stable is confident she is ready to bring up another win.
“She’s a lovely filly. She tries really hard and gives everything,” Buchanan said.
“I really like this race for her on her home track. Her last start at Scone over the 1300m wasn’t a bad run.
“She copped a check and came off the bridle and it took her a while to getting going again but she hit the line well.
“She has drawn well and we might find Serg has her quite handy. He has ridden her a number of times and learnt a bit about her last start that you can’t be too severe on her mouth and just have to get her comfortable.
“We will see where she is up to in this but I think she can run a good race.”
Buchanan said she will likely target the Provincial Championship with Dual Escape, who has had four starts for two wins, if she can bring up another victory on her home track.
“If she can win this race then I’d be seriously thinking about giving her a little breather and then aiming her for the Wyong Provincial Championship.
“I think she’s a nice progressive filly and it will be good to see if she can take the next step.”
Buchanan is also confident about the chances of Neruda, believing the Poets Choice gelding has a bright future.
“If he shows what I’m hoping he’ll show on Saturday then he will go ahead into some of the bigger three-year-old races that are coming up,” she said.
Neruda, to be ridden by Aaron Bullock, has drawn barrier five in the 1350m Maiden Plate.
He has finished fourth in his two career starts on the Beaumont track and at Hawkesbury on December 17.
“He’s stepping up to the 1350m but it should suit him. I was tossing up between this and the 1200m but I feel he’s going to be a really nice horse over a bit of ground.
“The run in here from the 1350m shoot means they can be in any barrier and be comfortable getting into a nice position.
“In his first race at Newcastle he led over the 1100m but at Hawkesbury the other day he bungled the start and was right back.
“I suspect he will probably be handy on Saturday and I expect him to run a big race.”
Buchanan saddles up American Moments in the 1600m and has engaged the services of apprentice Louise Day for the first time.
“She’s stepping up to the mile which I’ve been looking forward to.
“She went well last start at Tuncurry in weaker company. The mile will suit her and I’ve taken the weight off her by claiming with Louise.”
Texan Tycoon completes Buchanan’s runners, starting in the 1100m Class 1 Handicap.
Resuming from a spell, the Written Tycoon five-year-old, will also be ridden by Lisnyy. “He’s a big, big horse – a big juggernaut and it’s taken a long time for him to mature.
“Last preparation was his first and he is resuming here. I don’t know how he will handle the heat, that’s my major concern with him.
“I was happy with his trial at Gosford. There will be enough speed in the race that he will be comfortable and finding the line. I don’t expect him to win first up but he should race well.”
Buchanan is hosting a post-Christmas get-to-gether for her owners and hoping for a winner on the day.
“I’m excited about Dual Escape and Neruda but if we don’t get a win it will still be a great day out,” she said.
