The Kris Lees trained Vanderkemp may head to the Brisbane winter carnival if he wins the Greg Martin Memorial Class Two at Wyong on Sunday.
Vanderkemp, to be ridden by Brenton Avdulla, will be having his first start since an enforced spell.
He looked likely to develop into an above average horse following an impressive maiden win, on debut, at Gosford last November followed by a close second in a Class One at Hawkesbury four weeks later.
However the horse developed several niggling injuries and had to be spelled.
“He appears to be over them and his two trials were good,” foreman, Mal Ollerton, said.
“He is continuing to work well but Sunday will tell us how he is progressing.
“A trip to Brisbane has been talked about but he would have to win on Sunday for us to push on towards that goal.
“He is a lovely animal and early on we thought he would develop into a very nice horse but then he developed those couple of issues.
“I hope he can continue to progress.”
Vanderkemp is owned by Ron Wanless and was named after his good friend and former top harness racing driver, the late Michael Vanderkemp.
