Early markets are suggesting that two greys, the towering imported six year old His Majesty and the lightly raced but talented mare Daisy Duke, will fight out the finish of the $100,000 Provincial Championship Qualifier (1350m) at Wyong tomorrow (Thursday).
The Kim Waugh trained His Majesty is the early favourite at $3.50 and also the early favourite for the Championships final, on the strength of his effortless first up win on the Beaumont track at Newcastle.
His Majesty came from second last early to stroll to the lead in the straight with Blake Shinn doing nothing more than steering and he remains on the horse tomorrow.
The Tony McEvoy trained Daisy Duke is the surprise package of the series, only winning her maiden at Wyong on January 24 at her first start from a spell and only her third career start.
She then went to Canterbury and easily won a Benchmark 72 and it was the strength of the win and obvious improvement she will take from the run that has catapulted her into calculations.
There is also one other factor.
Brenton Avdulla rode her to both wins and also rode Waugh’s other runner, Supreme Effort, when he came from near last to win at Randwick on February 13.
However Avdulla has chosen to stick with Daisy Duke and James McDonald goes on to Supreme Effort, the third favourite at $5.50.
Daisy Duke has been the early firmer in the markets, tightening from $5.50 over night to $5 this morning.
McEvoy’s Sydney foreman, Barry Wintle, said he could not be happier with mare’s progress since her Canterbury win.
“She did a nice piece of work on Monday morning and looks a ball of muscle, she has never looked better” Wintle said.
“She has made amazing progress this preparation.
“It would be so nice to see her win for John and Pam Cornish and to see her go to the final.”
John Cornish retired as chairman of the Australian Turf Club in early 2014 so he and his wife could devote more time to their Torryburn Stud in the Hunter Valley where Daisy Duke was bred.
