Local trainer Kristen Buchanan will be looking to book her ticket to the Wyong Gold Cup with a win in this Sunday’s Cup Prelude.
The race, along with the La Gioconda, will be one of the features of a strong eight race card at the Star 104.5 FM Ladies Day Out Raceday.
The Jaguar/ Land Rover Wyong Cup Prelude has attracted a small but competitive field of five runners. It will be run over the Cup distance of 2100m with the winner exempt from the ballot in the 2017 Wyong Gold Cup.
Buchanan will saddle up Sakhumzi in the Cup Prelude and believes the six-year-old son of Authorized is capable of securing a spot in the Wyong Gold Cup with a win on Sunday. “He’s been racing very well lately and loves the distance,” Buchanan said.
“I really like this race for him, it’s a nice small field where he should get his chance,
“Originally we thought he was just a wet tracker but lately we have been very pleased with how he has been running on these drying surfaces.”
Buchanan has secured the services of jockey Serg Lisnyy to ride Sakhumzi but won’t be giving him any strict instructions on where to place the horse. “I will have to have a good look at the speed map before talking to Serg but I’d say we will have the horse wherever he is comfortable,” she said.
“The norton bit goes on him so if he does need to take a sit it should be easier to do that.”
The possibility of Sakhumzi winning on Sunday and guaranteeing himself a spot in the Wyong Gold Cup is an exciting thought for Buchanan. “I would absolutely love to have a runner in the Cup.
“I would have to talk to the owners as there are some other options out there for him and the Cup looks like it will have plenty of depth this year, but personally I would love to have a crack at it.”
In the 1600m Star 104.5 La Gioconda, Newcastle trainer Kris Lees will saddle up his only runner of the day in Fleeteor.
The five-year-old daughter of Northern Meteor was a strong winner first up at the Beaumont track at Newcastle before finishing down the track at her recent start in the Livermore Cup at Taree.
“She was good first up but was a bit plain last start at Taree,” Lees said.
“I think the track may have been a touch firm for her there so any give in the track she will appreciate come Sunday.
“Stepping up to the mile should really suit her and she will be ready to run well third up.”
