Damien Lane will consider a tilt at the Provincial Championships with the in-form Leogang, if the three-year-old can repeat his dominant last start Wyong win.
The Lonhro gelding brought up his second victory this preparation with a convincing four length win over the 1100m on January 28.
He lines up on Tuesday in the Class 2 over 1000m, on a program that honours Wyong trainers.
“He’s probably my best chance so it would have been good if he was in the Damien Lane race,” he joked.
“He has been a great horse for us. We brought him for $20,000 off Godolphin at the Gold Coast sales. He’s just really fit in to the routine at home and he’s racing great.
“His win at Scone was good and he probably should have won at Cessnock, where he got into all sorts of trouble. Then he won really well here at Wyong the other day.
“He’s a horse with a bit of ability and this looks another nice progressive race for him. I think he’s probably going in the city direction. We may have a crack at the 1200m Gosford Provincial heat. If he wins convincingly again he’ll go down that path and he if doesn’t then he might go for a let up.”
Lane said Leogang was owned by friends of his from Coonamble, a couple of who were builders and working in remote parts of Australia.
“They have been in a few horses with me but haven’t had a lot of luck. I’m glad to get a decent horse for them and they are having plenty of fun.
“Last time I spoke to them one of them was at Tennant Creek and another out the other side of Broken Hill, so there will be some cheering from there if he wins again.”
Blaike McDougall, who partnered Leogang in his last win, takes the ride again.
The stable has accepted with Kate’s Pearl in the same race, but Lane said the mare will most likely start at Port Macquarie on Sunday, which he considers a more “winnable” race for her.
Another Larga and Cervinia represent the stable in the Damien Lane BM 70 over 1350m.
Lane is treating the race as a stepping stone for Another Larga, who resumed at Gosford on January 30.
“He raced really good last preparation, winning three races culminating in a Canterbury mid-weeker,” Lanes said.
“His run at Gosford first up really good. He hadn’t trialled and 1100m was way too short for him.
“It is too short for him again on Tuesday but just a stepping stone. I’m sure he will race competitively again. I’m not sure if he’s sharp enough to win a 1350m but he’s in good order and looks in for a good preparation. “
His other runner Cervinia is resuming from a brief let-up and Lane considers her a chance.
“She went really good first up and then went crazy in front second up and pulled up with a few little issues,” he said.
“She’s had a bit of time between runs and her works been really good leading into this. I think while she might want the run, from the good draw she’s got early speed and will put herself in the race and will be in it until her fitness gives out.”
Lane has first-starter Day Star in the 1100m Prov and Maiden Handicap and believes she could be among the placegetters.
He said the Hard Spun filly didn’t show a lot in her two trials but had been working better at home.
“She’s had a few barrier problems and I’m not sure if that’s why she didn’t trial as good as she’d been working at home but hopefully we are on top of them.
“Being her first start she will just go around for the experience and in the small field she could earn some prizemoney. “
Completing Lane’s runners is Sea Pirate, vying for his first win from six starts in the 1600m Maiden.
