AUSTIN EYEING OFF STAKES WIN

AUSTIN EYEING OFF STAKES WIN  1

Nash Rawiller has an impressive record on Terra Mater and will partner the mare in her quest to claim Sunday’s $200,000 Listed Domeland Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at Wyong.

Jarrod Austin’s talented five-year-old is a among a super field of fillies and mares contesting the feature race on day two of the Carlton United Breweries Wyong Cup Carnival.

The Mona Lisa has previously been run on Cup Day but with the new three-day format is now Sunday’s feature, on a strong eight race card.

Terra Mater, a daughter of Wandjina, has been ridden by Rawiller in six previous races for three wins and a placing, including a metropolitan hat trick last summer.

The pair combined at her latest outing when she resumed at Rosehill on August 17 and was narrowly beaten by Kazou in a BM88 over 1200m.

Austin said there is more improvement to come and is excited about the prospect of the mare snaring a stakes win.

“She’s come back bigger and stronger, and everything is going to plan so far,” he said.

“We set her for the Mona Lisa Stakes some time ago and are looking forward to Sunday. She pulled up very well after Rosehill and worked really good this week. I’m very happy with her.

“We’d love to be able to pick up a stakes race for her, that would be the icing on the cake.”

As well as a champion jockey at the reins with two previous Mona Lisa’s to his credit, Terra Mater will benefit from barrier two on a good track over her favourite distance.

Three of her six victories have come over the 1350m along with two minor placings and she was narrowly beaten on debut at Wyong in November 22 so the track will suit.

Winning won’t be an easy task with strong competition from the likes of Bjorn Baker’s Shezanalister, who was third in the Group 2 Missile Stakes at Randwick last start and Kris Lees last start Rosehill winner Hellavadancer.

Gerald Ryan’s August 18 Mona Lisa Prelude winner Pajanti has drawn barrier four, the lightly raced four-year-old a previous Wyong winner over the 1350m.

Kim Waugh’s Selfless Act, runner-up in the Prelude, represents the locals but will have to overcome a wide barrier in 15, while Tracey Bartley’s Irish Kisses is second emergency but will start in the 1350m BM64.

The first of eight races gets underway at 12.55pm with the track currently rated a good four.

WYONG TRAINERS DOMINATE DAY ONE OF CARNIVAL

WYONG TRAINERS DOMINATE DAY ONE OF CARNIVAL  2

Fashion and thoroughbreds combined for a super afternoon at Wyong Race Club on Sunday, the opening day of the Carlton United Breweries Cup Carnival.

The ever-popular Star 104.5 Ladies Day signified the start of the newly formatted three-day carnival, with plenty of glitz and glamour on show in The Pavilion.

A large crowd was trackside enjoying the competitive eight race program from the club’s multiple function areas, including the public lounge and lawn.

Local trainers dominated the day with Damien Lane, Kim Waugh, Wayne Seelin and Rodney Bailey all saddling up winners.

In one of the most successful meetings for Wyong trainers in recent times, Damien Lane opened the winning account with Oakfield Blue Bell in the Carlton Wyong Cup Carnival Provincial Maiden over 1600m.

Rodney Bailey’s Let’s Go Johnny made it a race to race double for the locals, when he took out the 2024 Wyong Leading Trainer Kim Waugh 1600m Class 1.

Sapphire Kiss, trained by Wayne Seelin, caused an upset beating the more fancied runners in the Wyong Race Club Trainers Premiership Winner Peter And Paul Snowden 4YO & Up Maiden over 1100m.

It was then the turn of our leading trainer Kim Waugh who claimed the 1350m 2024 WRC Jockeys Premiership Winner & Leading Apprentice Jockey Zac Lloyd Midway BM64 with Foolish.

It was a big day for Waugh who was presented with her trophy for her eighth successive Wyong Trainers Premiership.

Hawkesbury visitor Brad Widdup was successful in the inaugural running of the Star 104.5 Wyong Cup Prelude.

The 2000m race carried a $60,000 purse, with the winner Gazumped now exempt for the ballot for the $250,000 Listed Wyong Leagues Group Cup on Friday, September 6.

The second feature, the 1200m $60,000 Domeland Mona Lisa Prelude was taken out by the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou trained Pajanti.

The four-year-old mare also exempt from the ballot for the $200,000 Listed Mona Lisa Stakes on Sunday, September 1.

Australia’s leading jockey James McDonald left the track with the perfect record, one win from his only ride, piloting Lilac to victory in the Lizzie Jelfs Punters Club 3YO Maiden for leading Sydney stable Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald.

After day one, Jay Ford leads the prestigious Nathan Berry Shield with seven points, followed by Braith Nock on six and Tommy Berry on five.

STRONG FIELDS FOR WYONG LADIES DAY

STRONG FIELDS FOR WYONG LADIES DAY 3

Wyong’s new format Carlton United Breweries Cup Carnival gets underway on Sunday with Star 104.5 Ladies Day and new additions, the Cup and Mona Lisa preludes, have attracted quality fields.

Our local trainers are represented in both features, Kim Waugh’s Doraskaya and Camaguey in the $60k Cup Prelude (2000m), while the stable has Always In and Selfless Act in the $60 Mona Lisa Prelude (1200m) joined by Kristen Buchanan’s duo Drama Dodger and Winning Proposal and Kellie Nicholls Michelle’s Gift.

The winner of each prelude will be exempt from the ballot in the $250,000 Listed Wyong Leagues Group Cup and $200,000 Domeland Mona Lisa Stakes to be run on Friday, September 1.

Waugh’s duo Camaguey and Doraskaya will carry her hopes of a Wyong Cup runner, the latter a last start Wyong winner of 1600m.

Buchanan is hedging her bets with talented filly Winning Proposal, who is dual accepted for the $200k Listed Rosebud at Rosehill on Saturday and the Mona Lisa Prelude.

“I’m in two minds with Winning Proposal but Drama Dodger will definitely start and has a good chance,” she said.

“Wherever Winning Proposal runs I’m expecting a strong performance. She trialled really nice at Randwick and is a lovely filly.

“I accepted with Drama Dodger in the BM64 (1350m) as well, but she has drawn much better in the prelude and deserves her chance.

“I was a little concerned with her on the Wyong track, but she hit the line really well last start and has trained on well since.”

A Nicconi mare, Drama Dodger has won two of her eight starts, and been placed twice. In her latest outing at Wyong on July 24 she was beaten a head over the 1200m and has previously won on a heavy track.

While Buchanan has accepted with new stable addition Hell Of A Fox in the 3YO Maiden (1200m) she is unlikely to start.

“She is much better on top of the ground so I will probably look elsewhere.

“That’s also the case for Hell Of A Show were he to get a run in the 1100m BM64. He is sixth emergency so it’s unlikely anyway. Oakfield Storm, in the same race is first up, but has drawn 16 and is also an emergency.

“It could be a lighter day for the stable than expected.”

The track is currently rated a Heavy 9, with the rail in the true position.

Bailey’s winning bingo

Bailey's winning bingo 4

WYONG trainer Rodney Bailey spoiled the Domeland “party” at his home track today.

The affable Bailey was confident beforehand that a firmer surface would help lightly-raced Norton Road recapture winning form – and he did exactly that in the inaugural Domeland-sponsored Kulnura Cup (a Conditional Benchmark 68 Handicap, 1300m) at $17.

Unfortunately for Domeland, Norton Road’s victory was at the expense of their only runner at the meeting, trainer Sara Ryan’s $2.60 favorite Spicy Hotpot.

Bailey's winning bingo 5

Norton Road, a $7500 online buy in 2021 and raced by the trainer’s daughter Bridget, needed time before getting to the races and won his first two starts at Wyong and Newcastle in January and February.

Bailey sent him for a spell, but the Stratum Star gelding had failed to recapture that form in four starts since resuming.

However, his trainer was adamant wet tracks had played a role in that and also rued his decision to put winkers on him, which he quickly changed.

Rider Jenny Duggan had Norton Road smoothly into the box seat outside Global Empire and, after hitting the front in the straight, the now five-year-old kicked strongly to hold out the challenge of Spicy Hotpot, who began awkwardly but nonetheless had every chance.

Third placegetter Killer Kerr ($17) isn’t far off another win after being slow to begin.

Norton Road’s return to winning form lift his earnings to nearly $67,000 – a tidy return indeed on his purchase price.

Fellow Wyong trainers Kim Waugh and Kristen Buchanan joined Bailey in the winning list, both making an excellent start to the new season.

Bailey's winning bingo 6

Waugh followed her Hawkesbury victory last Thursday with stable newcomer Northern Eyes by landing the Limitless Lodge Benchmark 64 Handicap (1600m) with Doraskaya (Jay Ford).

A $6.50 chance, Doraskaya really surged in the closing stages to overhaul another local, Allan Kehoe’s Dreamdeel ($2.70 favorite), who had made the running and looked home when nicely clear in the straight.

A five-year-old daughter of Russian Revolution, Doraskaya won her third race and is part-owned by the trainer’s husband, Australian cricket legend Mark.

Bailey's winning bingo 7

Buchanan followed her Newcastle victory yesterday with favorite Fioprospero ($2.15) by scoring with another punters’ elect – and a heavily backed one at that.

Four-year-old Kermadec mare Kervette had been placed on six occasions from 10 starts, and was backed from $2 to start $1.70 favorite in the Agrana Fruit Australia Provincial Maiden Handicap (1350m).

Gun apprentice Zac Lloyd took bad luck out of the equation, taking off on her approaching the home turn, and she quickly rounded up her rivals.

Kervette won stylishly from Noises ($10) and fellow local, Damien Lane’s Oakfield Blue Bell ($11).

“I expected her to beat hard to beat,” Buchanan said. “She drew well, had Zac (Lloyd) riding her and getting up to 1350m suited.

“We’ve got a lot of nice young horses coming through, so hopefully we’re set for another good season.”

Torie’s Rose ($5.50), racing in blinkers for the first time, was slowly away and did her best work at the end to finish fourth.

Lloyd, last season’s Wyong apprentice premiership winner, made it a double in consecutive races when successful on his master James Cummings’ Rip Off ($2.70 favorite) in the Milangall Park Maiden Handicap (1100m).

The four-year-old daughter of Ribchester took eight starts to break through after three minor placings.

She finished a shade strongly for a gallant Conchierro ($19), who fought valiantly to hold on in the straight.

Talk about an excellent start to the season! Definitely none better than leading Hawkesbury trainer Brad Widdup, who scored with debutante Canny Queen ($8.50) in the Economy Waste Group 3YO Maiden Plate (1200m).

This was his eighth starter in the first four days of the new season – and he has won five races and finished second with the other three.

Owner John Cordina’s Summertime Thoroughbreds, for whom Widdup won with Party Doll at Hawkesbury last Thursday, purchased the three-year-old daughter of Victoria Derby winner Ace High for $20,000 as a yearling in New Zealand last year.

It looks to be a pretty astute decision, given Canny Queen’s dam Quella Finale is a daughter of the great staying influence Zabeel, and here she is winning first-up at 1200m.

Winning rider Tom Sherry had Canny Queen racing smoothly in third last place on the fence, and got a split between runners in time for the filly to pip Forrest Gum ($5.50) in the last few strides.

Warwick Farm trainer Joe Pride got punters off to a good start when hotpot Elle Hudson ($1.35) took the Stone Real Estate Wyong Maiden Plate (1600m).

But not before they took a few deep breaths.

Elle Hudson (Regan Bayliss) needed the entire straight to run down Casterly Rock ($8.50) and break through for his first win.

“We bought him in New Zealand and he’s still learning his race craft,” Pride said.

“I’m sure he can win more races.”

Newcastle trainer David Atkins won the Sublime Aluminium & Glass Somersby Bracelet Midway Benchmark 64 Handicap (1000m) with Leave Me Some ($4.60).

Jockey Ash Morgan produced a brilliant ride, navigating a path between runners in the straight to deny $2.45 favorite Oceans One victory.

Age certainly isn’t worrying the nine-year-old mare.

This was her 59th start and her ninth win, and she has also been placed 19 times.

Oceans One was gallant under his 61kg (after apprentice Zac Wadick’s 2kg claim), especially as he conceded the winner 5kg.

Rosehill Gardens trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou didn’t hesitate to take Incarcerated back to Wyong for the Mangrove Mountain Memorial Club Town Plate Class 1 Handicap (1100m) – and he made it two in a row at the track.

Having only his fourth start, four-year-old Incarcerated ($2.80 co-favorite) was clearly too nippy for his rivals and scored by nearly five lengths.

The other joint favorite She’s All It was second after trying to put pressure on the winner on the winner on the home turn.

Incarcerated had won a Super Maiden (1200m) at Wyong on July 20 by two lengths, and he was even more impressive this time.

BAILEY KEEN ON HOME TRACK RUNNERS

BAILEY KEEN ON HOME TRACK RUNNERS 8

Rodney Bailey has enjoyed his most successful season in more than a decade and is hoping the wins can continue with his two runners at Wyong on Sunday.

Bailey, a veteran trainer of more than 30 years, maintains a small stable of around 10 at his Wyong base and bagged seven winners from 65 runners, and a further 14 placegetters.

Two of his 2023/24 winners Norton Road and Mr Bingo line up for Bailey on Sunday, Norton Road in the inaugural Domeland Kulnura Cup.

The Stratum Star gelding, a $7500 yearling purchase by Bailey, burst onto the scene in January this year with two successive wins at Wyong and Newcastle.

His recent form hasn’t been as strong, but Bailey said there are excuses.

“He’s still got the ability, but things haven’t been going his way,” he said. “It’s been a combination of things, he’s been over racing and the heavy tracks haven’t suited.

“He hasn’t had a lot of luck either and I made the mistake of putting winkers on him, which didn’t suit.”

But Bailey expects the five-year-old to put in one of his best performances in the 1300m BM68,

“We’ll ride him forward again, which will suit at Wyong, and I expect him to race really well.”

Bailey also has strong expectations of Mr Bingo in the 1000m Midway BM64.

The six-year-old son of Deep Field has won two of his 25 starts with eight minor placings.

Despite finishing at the rear of the field over 1000m at Queanbeyan last start, Bailey thinks he can figure in the finish on Sunday.

“Like Norton Road there have been excuses, he’s played up in the barriers a few times which hasn’t helped.

“He loves Wyong and I think he’ll go well. I’d say both mine are strong each way chances.”

Kim Waugh saddles up two home track runners, having already kick started  her local Wyong Trainers Premiership defence with a Hawkesbury win on Thursday.

In an outstanding training effort, Waugh claimed the title for the seventh successive season after training 40 winners in the past 12 months.

She was also runner-up in the Wyong Trainers Premiership, falling one short to Snowden Racing who trained 11 winners on the track.

Tyler Schiller claimed the Jockeys Premiership with 11 wins, while Zac Lloyd’s ten wins saw him take out the Apprentices title.

The first of eight races gets underway at midday.
