Last year’s Provincial Championship Qualifier at Wyong was won by the Bede Murray trained Sure And Fast which went on to win the $400,000 final at Royal Randwick.
History could repeat itself with the two early favourites for this year’s final, the Kim Waugh trained pair, His Majesty and Supreme Effort, heading the 19 nominations for Thursday’s Wyong Qualifier over 1350 metres.
His Majesty is the $4.60 favourite on the TAB Fixed market for the final on the strength of his first up win on the Beaumont track at Newcastle while Supreme Effort is the second favourite at $8 after he rocketed home from near last on the turn to win at Randwick.
Blake Shinn, who won on His Majesty at Newcastle retains the ride while James McDonald goes on to Supreme Effort.
Waugh said both horses had done well since their wins and would have their final pieces of serious work tomorrow (Saturday) morning.
“They have been going along with pace work and swimming but tomorrow both will have their final gallops,” Waugh said.
“I could not be happier with the way they have progressed.”
Waugh said she would be happy to see His Majesty sitting just off the pace in the race and Supreme Effort mid field.
The Waugh trained Oxford Poet, ridden by Shinn, was the favourite in last year’s Qualifier but was taken on in the lead and given no peace and eventually finished sixth.
Three of the horses on the third line of betting for the final, Better Not Blue, Daisy Duke and Game Pie are also nominated for Wyong along with Electric Power, Grand Punto, Me No Marsh Potato and Tatoosh who are all on the fourth line at $15.
