Chris Waller is poised to land the feature double at Wyong tomorrow with three favoured runners in the Listed Carlton Mid Wyong Gold Cup and the short priced favourite in the Listed Winning Appliances Mona Lisa.
Waller will have three runners in the cup, Junoob (Blake Shinn), Sacred Master (Hugh Bowman) and Loophole (Tim Clark) as he aims to win the race for the sixth time in the last seven years.
Junoob and Sacred Master are the $5 equal favourites in a wide open race.
By way of contrast Elle Lou (Bowman), his only runner in the Listed Mona Lisa, is a dominant $2.10 early favourite.
Although a five year old Elle Lou has been sparingly raced and she was stepped up to black type company for the first time a month ago when a fast finishing third in the Group Three Toy Show.
Brenton Avdulla, who has a great record at Wyong, will be the new rider on the Matthew Smith trained Frill Seeking, the equal second favourite at $6 along with the John O’Shea trained Fitou.
This will be Frill Seeking’s third run back from a freshen up after twice being placed at Rosehill.
Smith is confident she will run a big race despite the mare not winning beyond 1200 metres.
However her last two starts have been over 1350 metres and 1500 metres.
“She was strong when she ran second over 1500 metres and I have always thought she would get a distance like that,” Smith said.
“Brenton took the ride early which was a good sign and he rides Wyong really well.
“We know she will handle Wyong because she has won there before and she will be racing up on the speed.
“When she won at Wyong she broke one nine (1min .09 secs) and I don’t care what anyone says, it take a good horse to run time like that.
“After this race we will come back to Sydney and chase more black type races with her.”
