It’s almost a carbon copy of last year’s Carlton Mid Wyong Gold Cup for John Thompson, his imported galloper Orbec and jockey Kerrin McEvoy except that this year the trainer and rider would like to see a different start and a different result.
Last year Orbec ran third to the Chris Waller trained Beyond Thankful at his second run from a spell and his second Australian start.
He jumped from barrier two but almost tipped McEvoy out of the saddle when he went down on his nose.
Despite that he came from well back early and momentarily hit the front in the straight before being grabbed late.
Orbec goes into tomorrow’s (Friday) cup again second up from a spell and from barrier three.
After last year’s cup Orbec went on to run second in the Newcastle cup and fourth in the Metropolitan before a disappointing 15th in last year’s Geelong Cup.
He was then gelded and sent for a long spell and resumed with a sixth in the Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m) at Rosehill on August 18.
“After we gelded him he needed much longer to recover because he was an older horse,” Thompson said.
“He was getting too bully and we wanted a first class race horse, not a second class stallion.
“Last year’s targets were the Wyong and Newcastle cups and the Metropolitan and he fell just short in all three although it was a great run in the Metropolitan.
“He had had enough by the time the Geelong cup came around.
“His first up run this time in was good except that he was still a bit fat and he has had a couple of good gallops since then to get him ready for the cup and Kerrin has ridden him each time.
“We all hope he can go two better than last year.
“It’s a similar preparation and let’s hope he gets a clean getaway.”
Orbec is on the fourth line of betting at $7 ahead of the Chris Waller trained pair Junoob (Blake Shinn) and Sacred Master (Hugh Bowman).
Waller will also start the third favourite Loophole (Tim Clark) as he aims to win the cup for the sixth time in the last seven years.
He won his first in 2010 with Hawk Island followed The Verminator (2011), Wazn (2013), Multilateral (2014) and Beyond Thankful, ridden by Bowman, last year.
Gai Waterhouse interrupted his run by winning the cup in 2012 with Julienas.
