DAMIEN LANE considers Cervinia the best of his four runners at Sunday’s 2GO Family Race Day meeting.
The five-year-old Casino Prince mare was narrowly beaten at her last start at Scone on January 15 over the 1600m.
Damien believes if she can back up from that run she will be hard to beat in the 1600m CENTRAL COAST MARINERS CLASS 2 HANDICAP.
“I thought Scone was the right race for her and she was ready to win. She did everything right and just got tired the last 50m. “I was a little bit disappointed but hopefully the little, tight turning Wyong track might suit her a bit better.”
Jess Taylor has again been engaged to ride Cervinia, who will start from barrier three in a field of five. “She’s a lovely, big strong mare who doesn’t leave much in the tank and I’m hoping she will handle the short turn around.”
Debutant Neon Jungle lines up in the EVENT CINEMAS CG&E MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES).
Coming off two trials, Damien said the Reward For Effort three-year-old will improve on whatever he shows on Sunday. “He’s a nice horse. He went well in his first trial at Wyong which he won and in the second trial at Gosford, even though he was looking for 1000m, he still got to the line alright,” Damien said.
“He is a really strong horse and I’ll probably give him a couple of runs and put him out. “Roseglen Stud at Scone own him and they have been good supporters of mine.”
Neon Jungle will be ridden by Serg Lisnyy, who partners another of Damien’s runners, Kanguru in the 1200m PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WYONG FEB 23 BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP.
“I got this bloke off Crusher (Steve Farley) and it’s taken me a while to work him out,” Damien said. “He’s been a bit tricky but his last run at Newcastle was very good.
“He loomed up to win and I thought he was going to run straight past them. He finished third and didn’t get beaten very far. “The horse seems to travel well for Serg but from barrier 10 it’s not ideal.
“He can’t push forward because he will over race so he will have to go back and hopefully find some cover.
“He is raced by a big syndicate and they are all good people. I haven’t been able to get him over the line for them yet. “I hope I can turn that around.”
Jason Collett takes the ride on Arjen in the 1600m PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WYONG FEB 23 BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP.
“There’s a fair bit of pressure with this one,” Damien laughed, “because he’s raced by a few mates of mine from my home town Coonamble. “One of them, Lee Mulholland is coming down from Queensland and it’s the first time he’s seen him race. “Hopefully he can bring us some luck.
“He’ll be big odds on Sunday but he has a better draw and will be ridden more positive.”
Argen finished fifth at his last start at Wyong on January 4 over the 1600m. “He’s a really lazy horse and he responds to the whip. There were a couple of runs where he wasn’t touched with the whip and he ran accordingly.
“His three runs last preparation were really good and he went well at Taree first up. “Second up at Cessnock he got back and didn’t run on and at Scone he came from a mile back and made up a lot of ground.”
Argen’s last start was a fifth at Wyong on January 4 and Damien is hoping he can improve on that. Sean Hodgson, who runs the Wyong Equine Pool, is a co-owner of Argen.
The club will host a seven race meeting with the first getting underway at 1.25pm.
