A change in training tactics could be the secret to the Jeff Englebrecht trained Queen Elecktra breaking through for her debut win when she starts in Thursday’s HMA POWER GENERATION MAIDEN PLATE over a mile. The tough mare will be having her 15th start this preparation and while her form has been consistent she is still vying for her first victory. “I’ve changed things around in her training with more swimming and fast work so hopefully that will be the key,” Jeff said. “She races well almost every time she goes around and is nice and fit but her form over the mile has been a bit hit and miss.” Queen Elektra has had 11 starts over the 1600m and been placed five times. Thursday will be her first outing over the distance at her home track. “She went well over 1614m at Taree last start and I think this race is really suitable for her. “She doesn’t mind the sting out of the ground and they are predicting a bit of rain Wednesday night so that will be good for her if it comes.” Enjoying another good season, Jeff has three runners at Thursday’s HMA Race Day and is hoping to taste more success following a winner at the Wyong Metropolitan meeting last Wednesday. “It’s been a good season to date and if we get a wet winter there should be more to come. A couple of the older horses love the heavy going and they are getting ready to race.”
Jeff’s veteran galloper Bonus Spin resumes on Thursday in the HMA GTECH CYCLONES BENCHMARK 65 over 1100m. It is likely to be the last preparation for the nine-year-old who has 10 victories and 13 placings to his credit and more than $175,000 in prizemoney. “It will be sad to retire him because he’s been a great earner for us. You need these type of bread and butter horses in the stable. “He’s like a two-year-old at the moment and will probably chase them around on Thursday but if the rain comes he could be a different proposition. “He loves the heavy going but realistically anything from a mile to 2000m is his ideal distance so whatever he does in this race will be a bonus. “He is really sound but gets a bit of muscle soreness but that usually comes later in his preparation. “When he gets to his ideal distance and if the tracks are wet he usually picks up three in a row so we are hoping for plenty of rain this winter. “I’d love to see him get a mid-week metropolitan win in his last preparation because he deserves it. “
Completing the trifecta of runners for the Englebrecht stable is Power From Within in the 2100m HMA GEOTECHNICAL CLASS 2 HANDICAP. The mare has been unplaced in five starts on the Wyong track but Jeff considers a quick turn around could prove the difference. “All being well I’m planning to back her up from the 2100m at Gosford on Wednesday. “She mixes her form a bit and can get pretty stirred up on the track. “I think if she’s backing up a couple of days after Gosford it might help her settle. “She ran a nice second only beat a nose at Newcastle two starts ago over the 2300m. “Being by High Chapparal I’m still not convinced the 2100m suits her but there aren’t a lot of 2300m or further races. “Again if the sting is out of the ground she will appreciate it and I expect a good showing.”
